North East's future scientists turn out for Science Fun Day
Oct 02, 2012
On Saturday 29th September, over a thousand budding young scientists from North East Scotland were joined by their families at Banff and Buchan College for a special Family Science Day run by the Shell Education Service (SES).
The Family Science Day comes at the end of a week of science workshops in primary schools across the Aberdeenshire and Fraserburgh, which saw school children exploring and questioning science in a fun, hands-on way.
“Shell Family Science Days are all about bringing the whole family together to learn about and enjoy investigating science together,” said Alex Baird, Plant Installation Manager at Shell’s St Fergus Gas Plant.
The Family Science Day, which is supported by Shell staff and students from Banff and Buchan College and Mintlaw Academy, saw 1,116 primary school pupils from all over the North East, and their families, taking part in practical science activities such as building straw towers, making kites and creating jumping beans.
Alex Baird said: “Some of the biggest challenges that we face in the UK and globally, depend on people with science skills to find solutions, so getting children interested and enjoying science at an early age can encourage them to take their initial interest into secondary education and beyond and this is what we hope to achieve through our workshops and Family Days, which happen across the UK throughout the year.”
“SES reaches 60,000 children each year across the UK, involving them in science activities like those here today.
“Scotland’s rich scientific heritage has produced inventions such as penicillin, the telephone and television which are fixtures in our daily lives so if we are to encourage that kind of ingenuity we must get children interested from an early age. We are delighted to have welcomed so many young scientists from all over the North East and hope that they begin to see science as a fun and rewarding career.”
