First phase of Gannet pipeline oil removal operation concluded
Sep 25, 2012
Shell U.K. Limited has completed the first phase of its plans to remove oil contained within the outer carrier pipe of the Gannet F flowline bundle. The recovery operation involved the use of subsea pumps to recover oil into storage tanks on a recovery vessel. The recovered oil has been returned onshore for disposal via a licensed waste oil contractor.
Shell has worked in close co-operation with the Secretary of State’s Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention (SOSREP), the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Marine Scotland and the Health & Safety Executive, who have agreed the oil recovery plans. This is an important milestone in the remediation process, which is expected to be completed next year with the removal of remaining oil from the flowline bundle.
Shell is reviewing the future development of Gannet to identify ways of operating the field to its best potential.
