Two maternity leaves, one supportive culture

I joined Shell 6 years ago, coming from a small marketing agency. I started in the Employer Brand team as a Marketing Advisor, and now work as a Resourcing Lead specialising in early careers and managing our university partnerships.

Embracing change – personally and professionally

During my time at Shell, I’ve been lucky enough to have 2 children, each pregnancy and maternity leave has looked different; one in a pandemic and a lockdown, the other in a new team and with shared parental leave. They say it ‘takes a village’ to raise a child, and coming back from maternity leave the 2nd time has shown just how important my ‘work village’ has been for me.

I have an incredibly supportive manager, who was not only there for me throughout my maternity leave with help when I needed it, but has welcomed me back with open arms and the flexibility I need to settle back in. Work friends and colleagues who have checked in, met for lunch, offered support and shared just the right amount of work goss to keep me going. And finally, the enhanced maternity benefits offered by Shell, from pay through to coaching, all of which has enabled me to return to work feeling confident and ready.

“Shell’s flexibility and support have helped me grow both professionally and personally – through career changes, a pandemic, and becoming a parent.”

Redefining flexibility at work

Becoming a working parent has given me a whole new perspective on the importance of flexibility in the workplace. It’s not as simple as offering work from home days and flexible working hours (although both are benefits I greatly appreciate), it’s a culture that welcomes diversity, acknowledges personal circumstances and provides the support and trust I need to continue thriving in my career – that’s what flexible working means to me and I’m proud to be working for an organisation that delivers that.
