About Shell Recharge
What is Shell Recharge?
Shell Recharge is Shell’s on-forecourt Electric Vehicle (EV) charging service.
How many Shell Recharge locations are open?
Shell Recharge will be available at 70 service stations across the UK by the end of 2019. We are continuing to add further charge points on a regular basis.
Why do you only offer a 150kW charger in two places?
While Shell Little Waitrose Battersea and Shell Holywell are currently the only service stations to offer a 150kW charger, Shell’s plan is to install hundreds more charge posts (both 50 and 150kW) on retail sites across the UK over the coming years, aligning these with customers’ demands.
Where can I find my nearest Shell Recharge location?
A full list of sites offering Shell Recharge facilities is available on our station locator, or via the Shell Motorist App available in the app store or at www.shell.co.uk/motorists. This will be updated as each Shell Recharge location opens.
How did Shell select site locations?
Many of the Shell Recharge charging posts are located in areas where we know there is an established population of electric vehicle drivers. We selected service stations where we already have space for drivers to park and charge their vehicles, as well as those that offer facilities for drivers to use while they wait, including coffee, free WIFI, toilets and snacks.
When will you be opening more Shell Recharge sites? When will there be one in my area?
We will continue to roll our Shell Recharge sites regularly over the coming years in line with customer demand. Roll out plans include engaging with EV drivers to ensure we continue to meet the needs of our customers across the UK.
How many charge posts are provided at each site? Can I check the charge post is available / book one before I arrive?
48 Shell Recharge locations have one charging post and one location has two charging posts. Although customers cannot reserve a charging post in advance, you can check if the charge post is available using the Smoov, Shell Recharge and New Motion apps. Within the apps, Shell Recharge locations are marked with the Shell logo above a circle. This circle appears green when the charge post is available and red when in use.
How many locations are you planning in 2020? What’s your long-term plan?
Plans for the introduction of further Shell Recharge locations will be informed by the usage of the service at our current locations, including engaging with EV drivers to ensure we continue to meet the needs of our customers across the UK. It is our ambition to have 200 chare posts by the end of 2020.
How much does Shell Recharge cost?
Shell Recharge costs 39p per kilowatt hour, with a limited-time discount offer of 35p per kilowatt hour for customers who pay through the Shell Recharge app until 31st March 2020.
How do I pay for Shell Recharge? Do I have to be a member?
Shell Recharge operates on a pay-as-you-go basis, with no subscriptions. To pay for Shell Recharge, you can use a contactless payment card, a Shell Recharge App, a NewMotion app/card or the SMOOV app.

Why are you using mobile phone payment? I thought you weren’t allowed to use mobiles on a forecourt?
It is safe to use a mobile phone while in the shop or from inside your car on a forecourt, but not outside the vehicle. Once payment for Shell Recharge has been completed, customers are asked to put their phones away.
How to use Shell Recharge
Is my electric vehicle compatible with Shell Recharge?
Shell Recharge is compatible with most EVs, as our rapid 50kW direct current (DC) chargers are designed to work with most vehicle types that are currently on the road. We provide connections for combined charging system (CCS) and CHAdeMO as well as AC Type 2 (43kW) for the 50kW charge posts. Tesla adaptors are not supplied but drivers can use their own adaptors on the CHAdeMO connector.
How long will it take to charge my electric vehicle with Shell Recharge?
In approximately 30 minutes, our 50kW DC chargers can typically charge from 0-80% and the new 150kW high-powered charger can deliver power up to three times faster .
How can you say it will take 30 minutes? Aren’t all cars different?
Yes, we understand that all cars are different and it is the car which manages the speed of the charge. However, we quote 30 minutes as a guide for our customers, as our 50kW charge posts can deliver 50kW of charge which typically enables most cars to charge 0-80% in approximately 30 mins. Cars that are able to take advantage of the full speed offered by the 150kW charger generally have larger batteries and so require a faster charge to fill the battery in similar amounts of time3.
As per the Fastned website, the vehicle models that benefit from charging at speeds over 50kW include: Hyundai Ioniq, Hyundai KONA, Kia e-Niro, Jaguar I-PACE, Mercedes-Benz EQC, Audi e-tron Quattro and Tesla model 3.
Do I have to charge for the full time, can I just top up for five minutes?
Shell Recharge is completely flexible, so customers can charge for the amount of time they require – there is no minimum charge time.
Do I have to stay with my car/on the forecourt whilst it’s charging? Can I pop off and do my shopping?
You can leave your car charging at the Shell Recharge post and monitor progress through the Smoov app. However, customers should only leave their cars in the Shell Recharge space for the time needed to charge their car.
Will there be a penalty for drivers who leave their cars to charge for longer than 30 minutes?
We have a parking ticket system to discourage cars from overstaying. We do request that customers only leave their car in the Shell Recharge space for the time needed to charge their car and continually review our enforcement policies.
I have a Euroshell card and I am moving more of my fleet to electric. Will my card work on your chargers?
No – however, we are looking into providing fleet customers with a new EuroShell card which will be accepted on Shell Recharge charge posts.
Who is Allego?
Allego is one of the leading providers of charging solutions in Europe and Shell’s technology partner for Recharge. Allego manages the operations of the charge posts and the Smoov payment app and is also able to provide help to drivers using the service.
Why is Shell working with Allego? Can’t you just do this yourselves?
We have partnered with Allego because they are experts in this field and can provide Shell Recharge customers with 24/7 support with any technical problems should they occur.
How can I get help and support using Shell Recharge?
Allego have a dedicated free customer helpline (0800 029 4601) to support drivers should they need any assistance with the operation of the charge post.
Electric Vehicle Charging
What is the difference between a ‘rapid’, a ‘fast’ and a ‘high-powered’ charger?
Shell Recharge offers rapid chargers which are our 50kW chargers and typically charge most EVs in approximately 30 minutes4. High-powered chargers are 150kW chargers and can deliver power up to three times faster3. Fast chargers are usually either 7kW or 22 kW and so take longer to charge your car. These chargers are usually located in areas where the EV will be parked for a longer time (e.g. car parks).

Where does the electricity come from?
Shell Recharge locations are supplied with electricity from 100% certified renewable sources4 .
Won’t electric vehicle charging put too much pressure on the grid?
The power demand of an electric car means it is not like plugging in an iron or putting on the kettle – it is more like plugging in an extra house. That is why Shell is also supporting the transition to electric vehicles by working on a system to help the grid handle the predicted increase in electric vehicles.
Isn’t having electricity on a petrol forecourt dangerous? If it’s raining, am I in danger of being electrocuted?
EV charging is completely safe, including in the rain. Electricity only flows between the charger and the car once the cables are locked in place.
 Shell Recharge locations are supplied by 100% certified renewable electricity sources such as wind, solar and biomass.
Shell and NewMotion
Will Shell install NewMotion charge points at Shell retail sites?
NewMotion’s 22kW charge points are not appropriate for the type of fast charging needed on Shell forecourts. However, Shell does offer customers a full range of charge points and charging services at home, at work and on the go.
Will Shell/NewMotion customers get any benefits from this acquisition (promotional schemes, etc)?
Shell Energy Retail household customers can get a New Motion home charge point installed for the discounted price.

Why is the NewMotion app becoming the Shell Recharge app?
NewMotion is a proud member of the Shell Group. Together, Shell and NewMotion are working to meet the charging needs of electric vehicle drivers – at home, at work or on the road. Today a growing number of Shell forecourts across Europe are offering the Shell Recharge fast charging service. With the new Shell Recharge app we are planning to bring you a host of improved services and offerings across the Shell forecourts and the charging network in the near future.
How does my phone update to the Shell Recharge app?
The NewMotion app will automatically update to the Shell Recharge app. When automatic updates are turned off on a device, you will get in-app prompts linking you to update their app.
What if I don’t update to the Shell Recharge app?
The Shell Recharge update will happen automatically. If auto-updates are turned off and you don’t update manually, you will be using an outdated version of the app until you do update it to the Shell Recharge app.
Can I choose to opt out of the update?
You cannot opt out of the update, the Shell Recharge update will happen automatically. If auto-updates are turned off and you don’t update manually, you will be using an outdated version of the app until you do update it to the Shell Recharge app.
Am I now a customer of Shell?
No, you are still a NewMotion customer. NewMotion as of October 2017 has been a part of the Shell Group.
Settings & Functionalities
What is the difference between the new Shell Recharge app and old NewMotion app?
There will be no difference in functionality after the app update, only the look and feel of the app will change. We are planning to bring you a host of improved services and offerings across the Shell forecourts and the charging network through the Shell Recharge app in the near future.
Will my app settings be transferred to the new Shell Recharge app?
Most app setting will be transferred. Your favourite charge points and saved cars might be reset.
Where will my personal data go? Who will store/own my data?
Nothing will change, your personal data will continue to be stored and managed securely by NewMotion.
When will the Shell Recharge app be available?
The Shell Recharge app will go live on October 22, 2019.
In what countries will the Shell Recharge app be available?

Charge cards & costs
Will charge costs and sessions be different or affected?
No, there will be no change to charging costs due to the Shell Recharge update. In the United Kingdom, there will be a a limited-time discount offer of 35p per kilowatt hour for customers who pay through the Shell Recharge app until 31st March 2020.
Can I still use my charge card with the Shell Recharge app?
Yes, your charge card will still work with the new Shell Recharge app and at any charge point in the charge network.
Do I need to order a new charge card?
No, there is no need to order a new one, your current card will work with the new app and all charge points in the charge network.
Can I still order charge cards through the app?
You can still order charge cards through the app. This will be a Shell Recharge charge card.
Can I still order a NewMotion charge card?
The NewMotion charge card will no longer be available for private customers.
Is the Shell Recharge card different from the NewMotion charge card?
The Shell Recharge card gives access to the full NewMotion charge network under the same charge costs and conditions as the NewMotion charge card previously did. For more
