Community Notice - Shell Bacton Gas Plant
Friday 26th February
Shell UK Limited
Dear community members,
Please be advised that the Shell Bacton site will carry out controlled venting of natural gas in order to depressurise a pipeline to enable essential maintenance.
The venting will commence earliest Friday 26th February, which we anticipate to continue for approximately five days. We are aware that noise as a result of venting may be audible from near our fence line.
We will be managing this through continuous noise monitoring and minimising venting at night. We have informed the regulator as well as the local Bacton & Walcott Parish Councils, NNDC, MOD, Norfolk Police and our neighbouring terminals.

Annual Red Alert sounder test
Wednesday 3rd March 2021 at 1000 hrs
Dear community members,
As part of the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 2015 (COMAH), the Bacton Terminal Complex tests the Red Alert sounders on an annual basis every first Wednesday in March. This is the notification of that test, which will be performed on Wednesday 3rd March 2021 at 1000 hrs.
The Red Alert alarm is a loud, single tone undulating siren and is used in the unlikely event of a major incident on the Bacton Terminal Complex. This alarm is for all those residents living within the Public Information Zone (PIZ). Householders and businesses should ensure that all occupants are familiar with this alarm.
The sound of the alarm may travel some distance and will be audible to residents in the local area of the Bacton Terminal. The first annual test will last for approximately 10 minutes.
In addition, for ongoing maintenance, Shell has to test each sounder (1 x 4) individually. This will occur immediately after the annual test. This will be a prolonged test and therefore residents may well hear the alarm sound several times on that day, albeit when testing the sounders individually the alarm may well be quieter as only 1 sounder will be operational per test.
The annual test and the additional sounder tests could sound between 1000 until 1200 noon on the day.
Please do not be concerned by these alarms, they are tests only and no action from the public is required.
In the very unlikely event of a real incident occurring during the test period, residents who have signed up to the Alert cascade messaging system will receive a text/and or e-mail stating that there is a ‘live incident’.
We appreciate your patience and understanding while we perform these important tests.
Kind Regards,
Sherlyn Deguzman – Production Unit Manager

Immediately after this test, the Shell terminal will test the sounders 1 x 4 individually, to ensure all 4 are working independently. The individual tests are likely to be lower volume and not carry so far.
The tests will be carried out between 1000 until 1200 noon on the day soresidents may well hear alarms sound several times in this period.
Please do not be concerned by these alarms, they are tests only and no action from the public is required.
