„One of the key skills I’ve developed during my apprenticeship is confidence„

How is your mentor or team supporting you during your apprenticeship?

Since joining Shell my team has been very supportive during my apprenticeship. When I joined Shell, they provided a range of helpful resources and are always open to answering any question I have.

My manager trusts me with responsibility for projects and holds regular 1:1 meetings to ensure my work aligns with my degree studies – this has helped me grow personally and professionally.

Have you had opportunities to take on new challenges or responsibilities?

I recently collaborated with an external agency to refresh Shell Recharge imagery on Google, coordinating with around 100 Shell service stations to organise photoshoots. This involved ensuring HSSE compliance and managing scheduling challenges, including reshoots due to site manager availability and managing any other unforeseen challenges.

I also took part in a research project visiting Shell sites across the UK to observe B2B customer purchasing behaviour, alongside gaining insights into frontline issues that may not have been previously identified.

What skills have you developed that you’re most proud of?

One of the key skills I’ve developed during my apprenticeship is confidence.

At the beginning, I mainly participated in team meetings, but over time I’ve challenged myself to step out of my comfort zone. This has included presenting to colleagues and even delivering a workshop focused on roles in the Energy transition to support university students.

These experiences have strengthened my communication and presentation skills, giving me the courage to take on new opportunities with confidence.

„The apprenticeship has given me the chance to see the concepts I’m learning in my modules come to life in real projects”

What’s the most memorable experience you had as an apprentice at Shell?

I played a key role in organising and hosting an exclusive Shell Recharge event in Shell Office. The event attracted EV enthusiasts and leading voices to share insights and experiences, fostering meaningful discussions on topics such as “How to Attract and Retain Top Female Talent in the Fast-Evolving EV Sector.”

The aim of the event was to create a space for women in the EV industry to connect, learn, and inspire one another - attracting over 115 attendees.

It sounds like the Apprenticeship Programme is helping you grow personally and professionally. Can you share more on that?

My degree apprenticeship is helping me grow professionally by allowing me to apply academic learning directly to real projects. For example, a recent module focused on ‘Technology Innovation,’ and I supported the migration of EV functionality into the Shell App, enabling EV customers to join a loyalty scheme.

Alongside this, I’ve developed strong communication skills and gained a deeper understanding of the energy sector.

Personally, the apprenticeship has strengthened my time management, resilience, and confidence through balancing work and study.

What has been the most valuable lesson you've learned so far?

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned so far is the importance of communication and time management, alongside the value of applying theory to practice.

This apprenticeship has given me the chance to see the concepts I’m learning in my modules come to life in real projects. That connection between study and work not only reinforces my understanding but also sparks ideas for my assignments and projects. It’s taught me that experience is the best teacher — bridging academic knowledge with real-world scenarios.

Any final words of advice to students and school leavers considering an apprenticeship path?

Do it!

An apprenticeship is an amazing opportunity to earn a fully qualified degree while gaining hands-on experience that’s hard to get through the traditional university route.

You’re learning in real time, applying theory directly to practical situations, and building skills that employers value. Working for a large corporation also gives you exposure to different areas you might not even know exist.

For me, in marketing, the most exciting part is seeing the real-life impact of the work I do - knowing that campaigns I help with influence customers to use Shell Recharge.
