What inspired you to apply for an apprenticeship, and how did you decide Shell Apprenticeship Programme was the right path for you?
I wanted to gain a degree without going down the traditional university route. After completing a Business and Media BTEC, I was looking for a way to combine practical experience with higher education.
When Shell launched its apprenticeship scheme, the degree offered was a perfect fit, and the role aligned with my interests. Shell stood out for its focus on innovation and sustainability, plus the chance to work on impactful projects globally. The programme promised real responsibility and growth, matching my career goals.
How did you prepare for the application and selection process?
I started by researching Shell’s values, business areas, and the apprenticeship programme to understand what they were looking for.
Before application process, I practiced competency-based questions and prepared examples from my BTEC coursework and part-time roles to show relevant skills.
To be better prepared, I also reviewed the job description carefully and tailored my CV and responses to highlight my interest in marketing and Shell’s energy transition journey.
What was your first impression when you started the programme? What surprised you the most?
My first impression was how welcoming and supportive everyone was. I expected to feel like an outsider, but the team made me feel I truly belonged instead of experiencing imposter syndrome.
What surprised me most was being trusted with real responsibility from day one and getting exposure to impactful projects early on, showing how much Shell invests in apprentices and their future.
„The team made me feel I truly belonged„
Looking back, is there anything you wish you had known about apprenticeship experience before starting?
I wish I had known how much responsibility and exposure to real projects I would get so early on. I expected to start with small tasks, but the trust and opportunities given from day one was incredible. I also didn’t realize how supportive the network would be — having mentors and colleagues who genuinely want you to succeed makes a huge difference.
Can you share what’s your most memorable experience you had as an apprentice at Shell?
There have been many memorable moments, like traveling across the UK and working on exciting projects, but the one that stands out most was sending my first monthly network update to customers. Knowing the impact, it has for customers nationwide made me proud and showed how my work contributes to Shell’s success. It was a defining moment that highlighted the responsibility and trust given to apprentices from day one.
To close up, what advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?
Be proactive and make the most of every opportunity. You’ll have great days and some challenging ones but never give up — staying strong and resilient will help you grow and gain the experience you want. Ask questions, build relationships, and embrace challenges.
An apprenticeship is a fantastic way to learn, earn a degree, and develop professionally.
