What we do
For well over a century, Shell has been playing a major role in powering and fuelling the UK’s industry, transport and homes. Learn more about our operations and activities in the UK.

Shell in the UK
Shell UK remains one of the North Sea’s biggest producers, supplying around 10% of the UK’s total oil and gas needs. But perhaps the most recognisable face of Shell in the UK is our network of over 1,000 Shell-branded service stations.
In the years ahead, as the UK looks to strengthen energy security and deliver its 2050 net-zero goal, Shell UK aims to play a crucial role. We aim to be a major investor in the UK energy system by helping our customers decarbonise with a focus on transport and industry.

Our UK operations

Oil and gas
Shell UK has been producing oil and gas from the North Sea for for more than 50 years, providing the UK with reliable and secure energy. We currently provide about 10% of the UK’s total oil and gas supply.
Shell is not only a substantial energy producer in the UK, but also contributes to energy security by importing oil and gas. Our gas plants, pipeline systems and import terminals deliver more than 20% of the UK’s gas supply, including substantial volumes piped from Norway.

Low- and zero-carbon products and services
Shell is providing more renewable and low-carbon energy options for customers in areas including offshore wind and hydrogen. At the beginning of 2022, Shell UK won bids to develop 5 gigawatts of floating wind power off the east and north-east coast of Scotland, which could bring enough clean energy to power the annual equivalent of 6 million homes.

Electric vehicle charging
We continue to invest in electric mobility infrastructure to support the UK’s switch to electric vehicles. By 2035 we aim for 90% of drivers in the UK to be within 10 minutes of a Shell charger.

Shell stations network
Perhaps the most recognisable face of Shell in the UK is our network of over 1,000 service stations. Here, we welcome nearly 3.5 million customers every week. We are a leading convenience retailer through our forecourt shops. One in three transactions at our forecourts is for drinks, snacks or groceries and does not include fuel.

Fuels, lubricants and petrochemicals
As well as from producing and supplying oil and gas, we also supply, trade and market products made from oil and gas. These include fuels and lubricants for hundreds of commercial customers, including airlines.
At our Mossmorran petrochemicals joint venture facility in Scotland, we extract ethane from North Sea gas which is then processed into ethylene. This, in turn, is converted into the chemical building blocks needed to make everyday items such as phone cases, car parts and shampoo.

Carbon capture and storage
At Shell, we believe that carbon capture and storage (CCS) will be an essential technology in helping the UK, and Shell, to achieve our net-zero emissions targets. Shell continues to work with governments, customers and partners to unlock the potential for CCS to reduce emissions where there are currently few viable low-carbon alternatives.

Helping power the UK now, and into the future
From installing electric vehicle (EV) chargers, to helping supply UK gas, to building skills for the energy transition.
