Shell has joined forces with engineering, 3D printing and injection-moulding experts from across Europe to form a ‘consortium’ helping to provide vital Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the healthcare sector.

Total, Shell, Baker Hughes and The Oil & Gas Technology Centre have worked with NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and NHS Grampian to develop and deploy reusable face shield visors.

Robin Sayer, Technical Operations Manager and Head of Mechanical Engineering, Medical Devices Unit, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: “We have produced 16,000 already and have the capability to make more as and when our staff need them. Although this doesn’t eliminate the need for disposable visors, these reusable visors have an important part to play in ensuring the availability of PPE for staff. Our thanks to the energy companies who have supported us.”

The visor design has been modified and tested by consortium members working closely with NHS Trusts to make sure it fits stringent medical requirements. They are designed to be more comfortable to wear, easily disassembled, decontaminated and safely reused.

The visor headband is produced using an injection mould, funded by the consortium which allowed the visors to be produced in large numbers to a high quality and in a short time-frame. The design is available for other organisations to use.

Vince Shields, who works at NHS Grampian in their COVID-19 response team, said: “We enormously appreciate the support from Total, Shell, Baker Hughes and the OGTC at this time. They worked hard to provide visors which meet our needs and their donation is a welcome addition to our core stock of PPE.”
