Colin Crooks, CEO Shell Energy Retail Limited, said, “A recent survey of senior business decision makers across the U.K. found that almost two thirds either already purchase renewable electricity or are planning to do so as environmental factors become more important to businesses of all sizes.

“We can help them on their decarbonisation journey, by offering simple and reliable solutions for managing their energy costs and planning their sustainability roadmap. Together, we can play a part in the U.K.’s national drive to net zero carbon emissions.”

Shell Energy aims to help customers reduce their carbon footprint, at home and work alike. Almost 900,000 homeowners already buy 100% renewable electricity from Shell Energy Retail Limited and business customers will now be able to do the same through Shell Energy UK Limited – and to consider options to decarbonise their gas usage.

Sustainability is of growing importance to businesses of all sizes – a recent survey by Shell Energy UK of senior decision makers across the UK2 found that 36% already purchase renewable energy for their business, and another 30% plan to do so in the future.

Under the rebrand, Hudson Energy’s existing customer contracts will not change, nor will their supplies be interrupted. Existing and prospective customers will also benefit from direct access to Shell’s global expertise – and a suite of services to help businesses reduce their carbon footprint. Businesses will also be able to access natural gas, green gas and other bespoke cleaner energy solutions.

The rebrand comes a year after Shell Energy Retail Limited acquired Hudson Energy Supply UK Limited and is a further step towards Shell building an interconnected power business in the UK. This is part of Shell’s wider ambition to become a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050, or sooner, in step with society.

About Shell’s aim to become a significant global power business

Shell is building an interconnected power business: from generating electricity, to buying and selling it, storing it and supplying directly to customers to power homes, businesses and vehicles.

Ultimately, we want to offer customers different options for cleaner energy based on their needs and location, as we lay the foundations for a flexible, sustainable business for the long term.

We see power as a business that could in the future sit alongside Shell’s current offerings in oil, gas and chemicals.

1 All of our electricity comes from 100% renewable sources like wind, solar and biomass. Our renewable electricity for business customers is backed by UK-certified renewable certificates of origin, which means that all of the electricity and any green gas you buy from us is matched with the equivalent amount of units from 100% renewable sources. For households, it is certified by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs), which guarantee that for every unit of electricity our customers use, a unit of renewable electricity is put into the grid by renewable generators in the UK. As the demand for REGOs grows, this creates more opportunities for renewable generators in the UK to grow too.

2 In an Opinium Research survey conducted between 28 October and 4 November 2020, 349 of 524 senior-level business energy decisionmakers representing UK businesses of all sizes in more than 18 industry sectors said that they already purchased renewable energy for their business, or that they were planning to.
