UTTO vs STOU: Understanding the difference
UTTO – Universal Tractor Transmission Oil
UTTOs are specialized lubricants engineered to protect and optimize the performance of a tractor’s transmission, hydraulics, and wet brake systems. They are not intended for engine lubrication.
Key Applications:
- Transmission systems: including manual, powershift (PS), continuously variable (CVT), dual-clutch (DCT), and infinitely variable transmissions (IVT)
- Differentials and transfer boxes (for engaging front-wheel drive)
- Wet brakes
- Hydraulic systems: internal (e.g., hydrostatic transmission), external, and hitch
- Power Take-Off (PTO) mechanisms
Why Shell UTTO?
- Formulated to meet OEM specifications

STOU – Super Tractor Oil Universal
STOUs are multi-functional oils intended to lubricate both the engine and the transmission/hydraulic systems of older tractors. However, they are not suitable for modern engines due to evolving performance and emissions requirements.
Limitations of STOU:
- Typically meets engine oil standards up to API CF-4
- Cannot support modern engines requiring API CH-4 or CI-4 (e.g., those with cooled EGR systems or Stage II/IIIa emissions compliance)
- No longer widely developed by oil and additive companies due to limited compatibility with newer machinery
