We understand the many challenges today’s fleets face on the road to a lower carbon future. Whether you’re just starting to consider alternative fuels or already have electric vehicles, your fleet will produce emissions that are just unavoidable. And that’s where our new carbon offsetting service can help.

Navigating a complex system

It's easy

Sign-up and your fleet can drive carbon neutral, simply by using the Shell Card.

Towards a universal solution

Shell takes care of the rest

We offset your fleet’s unavoidable carbon emissions through the purchase of carbon credits from a portfolio of carefully chosen nature-based projects

The projects in the portfolio

The portfolio of selected projects include, as examples, forest developments or grassland preservation projects, which capture and store carbon from the atmosphere

How does it work?

  • You opt-in to offset for carbon emissions from your fleet. Your drivers use the Shell Card to refuel at both Shell and third-party service stations as usual. Service charges will be applied to your consolidated Shell Card invoices

  • Shell tracks your fleet's overall fuel consumption and calculates the associated CO₂ emissions

  • Shell will purchase carbon credits equivalent to the amount of your fleet's carbon emissions to offset them through Shell’s global portfolio of nature-based solutions projects

  • Shell will issue an annual verified carbon reduction certificate confirming that the fuel has been offset

Shell automatically calculates your well-to-wheel carbon emissions and offsets these through Shell’s global portfolio of nature-based solutions projects.

Detail 1

Shell works with numerous carefully selected nature-based projects around the world in locations such as Peru, Indonesia, Kenya and the United Kingdom. These projects help reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving the livelihoods of local communities and preserving biodiversity and wildlife.

Visit our interactive globe for more information on our projects and how nature-based solutions work.

Detail 2

To ensure the quality and integrity of nature-based carbon credits, there is a robust programme of third-party independent standards, verification processes and registries.

Detail 3

One example of a project that Shell works with is the Cordillera Azul National Park REDD+ project in Peru. It protects 1.6 million hectares of threatened forest containing 28 high conservation value species.

Detail 4

440 communities live within the Cordillera Azul National Park REDD+ project zone, including 30 indigenous communities.

Detail 5

The Cordillera Azul National Park REDD+ project also supports 716 jobs, 30% held by women, 24 sustainable enterprises and has improved 6 schools for the community.

Carbon Offsetting FAQs

The terms “Carbon Neutral”, “Carbon Offset” or “Carbon offset compensation” are applied in a non-technical way to indicate that Shell has engaged in a transaction to ensure that an amount of carbon dioxide equivalent to that associated with the production, delivery and usage of the fuel has been removed from the atmosphere through a nature-based process or emissions saved through avoided deforestation”
