Women working at Lab

Shell's science technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education programmes play an important role in nurturing the next generation of engineers, but we can’t do it alone. That’s why we are a principal partner of This Is Engineering campaign to create impact at scale – and whilst that’s a big challenge, it’s also an exciting one.

The campaign has been created by the Royal Academy of Engineering, the UK’s national academy for engineering and technology, as part of their broader campaign to address the significant skills and diversity shortfall hampering the profession. At the heart of This is Engineering are a series of short videos, profiling young engineers who are doing something remarkable.

One of the major barriers to young people aspiring to be engineers is deeply rooted cultural perceptions of engineering as narrow, mechanical, too technical, and dull: a perception that’s being reinforced online. This is Engineering is looking to re-brand the profession by talking to young people about the engineering that shapes the things they love, like sport, fashion and tech. It then follows this up with great careers information from Tomorrow’s Engineers.

Myth busting is an integral part of Shell's STEM education programmes. That’s why we joined this mission to provide up-to-date, modern views on engineering. The campaign is designed to illustrate that engineering is for everyone; it’s varied, creative and innovative.
