Families were given tips and training on how to drive more efficiently and smoothly
Eleven families, from across the UK, took part in a six-week campaign where they applied the Shell fuel saving tips (PDF, 3537 KB) - opens in new window. The tips focused on car maintenance and driving technique, for example keeping tyres at the right pressure, avoiding excess weight, driving smoothly and keeping a constant speed.
Every weekday journey the families made was monitored using telemetry technology, which was fitted onto their own vehicles. The telemetry provided real time data on fuel economy and driving performance.

Overall winners, the Choo family from Cardiff
During the campaign the families were given personal travel planning guidance from their local authority. Each authority reviewed the family’s day to day activities and provided guidance on how they could get out of their cars.
The overall winners of the experiment based on the two criteria of improving fuel efficiency and local journey planning were the family from Cardiff. Amanda Choo, from the Cardiff family, said:
“We were astonished to see how much we could save by making simple changes to the way we drive and travel. We have changed our behaviour without needing to revolutionise our lifestyle. We encourage other families to follow the Shell Smarter Drivers tips – they really do make a big difference and once you start doing things like driving more smoothly they become second nature.”
The results were independently audited by leading sustainability think tank, Forum for the Future. Forum for the Future then drafted a report with recommendations for Shell.
