The Science Museum

Launchpad - the Science Museum's most popular gallery is a hands-on science gallery for children aged 8 - 14 years.

Shell UK’s sponsorship has enabled the Science Museum to build a completely new Launchpad that is not only significantly larger than the current Launchpad, but will also provide support for new approaches to teaching science in schools across the UK.

The new Launchpad has been re-designed to be more sophisticated – to enable the gallery to maintain the interest of its target market of 8-14 year olds.

Accompanying the gallery is a new and innovative Launchpad website, at the heart of which sits Launchball - an interactive game that mirrors and supports the gallery's content. Launchball - which teachers can upload to their interactive whiteboards for use within science lessons - is accompanied by Lauchpad-related activities to try at home or at school, plus plenty about what you can see and do in the gallery itself. There will also be an extended programme of outreach activities in schools across the UK.

The gallery is divided into 6 broad themes:

  • Energy
  • Electricity
  • Forces & Motion
  • Light
  • Materials
  • Sound

All themes are linked to the National curriculum.  For more information, visit the Science Museum’s website at http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk - opens in new window.
