Our values

As a global energy company we set high standards of performance and ethical behaviours. We are judged by how we act - our reputation is upheld by how we live up to our core values honesty, integrity and respect for people. The Shell General Business Principles, Code of Conduct and Code of Ethics help everyone at Shell act in line with these values and comply with all relevant legislation and regulations.

The Shell General Business Principles

Our eight Business Principles are based on our core values and indicate how we promote trust, openness, teamwork and professionalism, and pride in what we do. We were one of the first global companies to state and share our beliefs when we published our General Business Principles in 1976. As part of these principles, we commit to contribute to sustainable development, balancing short and long-term interests and integrating economic, environmental and social considerations into our decision-making.

The Shell Code of Conduct

How should I react if a business partner offers me a gift? What is insider information and how must I deal with it? Since we published our Business Principles in 1970s, the business environment has become more competitive and regulatory demands have become more complicated and demanding.

We created the Shell Code of Conduct to help staff apply the Shell General Business Principles in line with our core values. Our Code of Conduct provides practical advice to everyone at Shell on how to comply with laws and regulations, how to relate to others involved in the business and helps to resolve difficult questions about business conduct.

Code of Ethics

The Shell Code of Ethics for Executive Directors and Senior Financial Officers of the group is specifically intended to meet the requirements of Section 406 of the Sarbanes Oxley Act - opens in new window and the listing requirements of the New York Stock Exchange - opens in new window by providing for a number of implementing requirements in the area of disclosure controls and the avoidance of conflicts of interest by senior job holders.
